Former Sterneckerbräu in Munich: New restaurant planned in the valley – Munich

For 66 years the inn was no longer an inn, now it is to become one again. The restaurateurs Constantin Wahl as well as Stephan and Sebastian Kuffler want to revive the Sterneckerbräu in Tal 38 on the corner of the small Sterneckerstrasse. Wahl, who already runs the Tegernseer Tal Bräuhaus together with Peter Kinner in the valley near the old town hall, rented the ground floor of the property last year and now wants to convert it into a modern Bavarian restaurant with the two Kufflers over the course of the year. The name of the new inn has not yet been decided, and no planning applications have been submitted so far.

However, the new inn will not be called the Sterneckerbräu, and there are historical reasons for that. The restaurant, which was first mentioned here in 1434 and served as a shooting club for the Stachelschützengesellschaft, was not only the seat of the small Sternecker brewery from 1575, but also the clubhouse of the German Workers’ Party from 1919, which also had its office there.

Adolf Hitler attended a party meeting in the next room here in September 1919 and joined a few days later. It eventually became the NSDAP, and in November 1933 Hitler opened the Nazi Party Museum in the Sterneckerbräu. Ironically, this brown brewery, built between 1901 and 1902 by Heilmann & Littmann for the then brewery owner Joseph Höcherl, was spared the bombs of World War II. The restaurant on the ground floor existed until 1957, after which it became a shop. Most recently, a bedroom decorator and a computer shop were housed there.

Now, on 600 square meters on the ground floor and another 300 square meters in the basement, “a contemporary Munich restaurant” (Wahl) is to be built, “a new classic for the Munich public”. Stephan and Sebastian Kuffler also see potential: “With the planned extension of the pedestrian zone to the Isartor, the district will be further upgraded. We will contribute to this.”
