An autumn storm hits the north. The DWD is expecting isolated hurricane-like squalls on the North Sea coast today. There is a storm surge warning – the Hamburg fish market is already under water.
The flood is expected to be up to two meters higher than the mean tidal flood. The Federal Office for Shipping and Hydrography (BSH) predicted this for the morning and afternoon. The entire German North Sea coast as well as Emden, Bremen and Hamburg are affected. A storm surge warning is in effect.

Hamburg fish market flooded
Beaches, foreshores and harbor areas could be flooded. As a result of rising water levels in the Elbe, the fish market in Hamburg is already under water. The parking lot in front of the fish auction hall and the parking lot in the Övelgönne district were full. The flooding is expected to become even higher in the afternoon. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the wind is expected to reach speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour on the coast and will decrease from the afternoon onwards. According to the information, the weather situation is expected to calm down on Saturday. However, because the storm “Niklas” brings colder polar air with it, there may be snowfall in the mountains today and at the weekend.
Ferry operations to and from the East Frisian Islands restricted
Travelers must expect restrictions on ferry traffic to and from the East Frisian Islands due to the storm. Deutsche Bahn is completely suspending ferry traffic to and from Wangerooge today due to the announced storm surges. On Saturday the ferries will also be partially canceled or run at different times.
After some of the ferries between the mainland and Spiekeroog left at different times on Thursday, they are not running at all today. They should drive again on Saturday.
Ferries are also canceled in Schleswig-Holstein
Restrictions in ferry operations are also being felt in Schleswig-Holstein: According to the shipping company, the ferries between Schlüttsiel and the Halligen are ceasing operations, as are those to Langeneß. The ferry service was also canceled in Kiel – but there because of low water due to the strong westerly wind.
