Seven men and a woman, all aged around twenty, are accused of having, last October, killed two people by gunfire, in front of the terrace of a café in Pont-Saint-Esprit, a town located in the Rhône valley.

Eight people were indicted for organized gang murder as part of the investigation into a double murder committed at the end of October in Pont-Saint-Esprit (Gard), the Nîmes prosecutor’s office said in a press release published on Saturday.

If the accused – seven men and a woman, all aged around twenty – “contest their participation in these facts”the investigating judge considered “that there is serious and consistent evidence against them”said the prosecutor, Cécile Gensac.

Vast operation mobilizing 240 gendarmes

In addition to the charge of murder by an organized gang, the investigating magistrate retained those of “attempted murder by an organized gang, carrying, transporting, possession of category A and B weapons, damage by an organized gang to property by dangerous means for people as well as participation in a criminal association with a view to committing a crime,” she added. All those indicted were placed in pre-trial detention.

Two people were shot dead and two seriously injured on the night of October 28 to 29, 2023 in front of the terrace of a café in Pont-Saint-Esprit, a town located in the Rhône valley.

Six months after the events, investigators from the Nîmes research section made 13 arrests on April 30, during a vast operation which mobilized 240 gendarmes.
