Aldi: How the discounter is shaking up the fitness market – Economy

The discounter has launched a free fitness app and is competing with established providers. In order to establish itself in the industry, Aldi is also cooperating with a large fitness studio chain.

Kai Schmidhuber’s first experience with a gym ended painfully. The Aldi manager broke his metatarsal bone a few years ago because he overloaded it on the treadmill out of false ambition: “I didn’t want to leave the assembly line like the person on the assembly line next to me,” says the now 42-year-old. Schmidhuber then refrained from visiting Muckibuden for a long time. But now he has taken out a membership again – of course via the “Aldi Sports” app. Finally, Schmidhuber is responsible for digital as managing director at the supermarket chain Aldi Süd. And so for this cell phone program, which has been on the market since December.
