Your favorite cocktails contain more sugar than you think

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a maximum of six teaspoons of sugar – i.e. 25 grams per day. This corresponds to around five percent of the calorie requirement. This is drastic and even goes a step further than the last WHO recommendation. It was still said that if you want to reduce the risk of unhealthy weight gain and tooth decay, you should consume a maximum of ten percent of your daily calories in the form of sugar.

If you think you just have to leave out the sugar in your coffee, you’re wrong. The hidden added sugar in food and drinks is particularly critical. Also sugar, which is naturally contained in honey, syrup, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates. By the way, sugar, which is found in fruit, vegetables and milk, is not said to be harmful. At least researchers have not yet been able to prove any negative consequences. But it’s all about the hidden sugar found in processed foods.

Cola covers your daily sugar requirement for the whole day

Ketchup is one such example: one tablespoon of tomato sauce contains about a teaspoon of sugar. That’s already a sixth of the recommended daily ration. Lemonade is even worse: a 250 milliliter glass of cola already contains 27 grams of sugar, which is more than you should consume in a day.

And cocktails, which are often drunk as an aperitif before dinner, are also real calorie bombs. A mojito, for example, has 23.47 grams of sugar, a margarita already has 55 grams. From February 18th to March 24th, presenter Dieter Könnes invites viewers of “stern TV am Sonntag” to work together to reduce sugar consumption in just five weeks under the motto “Simply Sugar Free”.
