The first intervention took place shortly before 9 a.m. A person who had boarded his annex to join his pleasure boat at anchor on the Glénan archipelago (Finistère) fell into the water.
Alerted by witnesses, the regional operational surveillance and rescue center (Cross) deployed significant resources, notably by helicopter, to try to find the boater. Spotted shortly before 11 a.m., the body was extracted from the water, but the victim could not be resuscitated.
Rescued by people rowing
At midday, emergency services were again called upon to rescue a swimmer in difficulty. The 56-year-old man was swimming on Kerfany beach, in Moëlan-sur-Mer, when he showed worrying signs. Two people on an oar were able to pull the swimmer out of the water and bring him back to the beach, before providing first aid. A few minutes later, the firefighters took over. Insufficient to save the victim, in cardiorespiratory arrest.
In 2022, nearly 6,500 rescue operations took place in France, involving 17,000 boaters and professionals. A little less than a hundred people died. The figure for drownings is much higher with around 1,000 deaths recorded each year.
