The number of organ donations in Bavaria is declining – Bavaria

The number of organ donations in Bavaria fell slightly last year. In 2023, 126 people donated one or more organs after their death, as the German Organ Transplantation Foundation (DSO) announced. A year earlier there were 128 donors. This corresponded to 9.4 donors per million inhabitants.

Nationwide the rate was 11.4 donors per million inhabitants. In a comparison of federal states last year, Bavaria was third in terms of the number of organ donors after North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. The Free State also ranked third in terms of the number of organs donated. According to the preliminary DSO figures, 360 organs were donated in Bavaria last year. A year earlier there were 425.

The international placement agency Eurotransplant distributes organ donations according to established medical criteria. In 2023, 450 organs that were removed nationwide or abroad were transplanted in Bavaria. At the same time, 1,191 people in the Free State were waiting for one or more organs. There is still a significant shortage of donor organs, so not everyone can be helped, the DSO said.
