Strike in Munich: Local public transport, main route blocked – Munich

This Friday, the employees of the Munich Transport Company (MVG) are called on for the second day in a row to go on warning strike. The subway and trams are standing still because there are not enough drivers. Only line U6 should start operating from around 8 a.m., according to MVG. It should then run every ten minutes, at least as long as there is enough staff.

MVG reports that half of the buses planned for this time are currently in use. They run at irregular intervals on most lines. There is currently no operation on these lines: X30, 58/68, 147, 153, 159, 169, 176, 179, 186.

If enough drivers are available, “individual lines can be occupied during the day,” said the MVG on Thursday evening on its website. The work stoppages are expected to last until early Saturday morning (4 a.m.). The MVG provides information about the current situation on your website and in the MVG app.

The S-Bahn, which is operated by Deutsche Bahn, is not affected by the strike. However, the main route was closed in the morning due to an emergency operation between Ostbahnhof and Pasing. The railway expected around 7.40 a.m. that the closure would last about two hours.

On Thursday, numerous employees of the transport company took part in the strike called by Verdi. The subway and tram traffic came to an almost complete standstill. Only the U6 ran in the morning, the tram 20 between Moosach and Stachus remained in operation throughout the day. A few of the bus lines were completely canceled, most were served, albeit in a thinned-out form.

Verdi also called for all-day warning strikes in local public transport in Nuremberg, Augsburg, Regensburg, Ingolstadt, Bamberg and Bayreuth on Friday. In the case of Nuremberg, this will also affect Erlangen and Fürth. There are also numerous warning strikes in the public sector. On Friday, among other things, they will affect garbage disposal and recycling centers in Munich.

In the collective bargaining in the public sector and local transport companies, Verdi is demanding 10.5 percent more wages, but at least 500 euros more per month. In addition, the union is committed to ensuring that the employees of MVG, who have been paid according to an in-house tariff, will in future be paid according to the collective agreement for local transport that is valid throughout Bavaria.

This Friday, the climate movement Fridays for Future will be demonstrating at Munich’s Odeonsplatz from 12 noon. The MVG strikers also take part in the protest rally.
