Storm Bret: Martinique placed in cyclone red vigilance from 12 p.m.

The forecasts are becoming more precise and so is the level of vigilance. The strong tropical storm Bret is located a few hundred kilometers from Martinique which is placed in cyclone red vigilance this Thursday, June 22, 2023. The phenomenon will interest the island with heavy rains and strong winds.

The strengthening of tropical storm Bret during the night of June 21 to 22 led the Prefect to bring together this morning at 6:30 a.m. the State services and Météo-France for a situation update.

Given the evolution of the situation, the Prefect places Martinique on hurricane red alert.

This decision takes effect from 12:00 p.m. today.

Bret is still a strong tropical storm, its trajectory towards the Lesser Antilles is confirmed. The center is expected to pass between Saint Lucia and southern Martinique. This means that Martinique remains in the zone of strong winds. In terms of timing, the center of Bret is expected to pass these islands between late afternoon, early evening and mid-night. That is a peak of degraded weather conditions over this period.

Eva Merceron, deputy head of the forecast service at Météo France Martinique, interviewed by Pedro Monnerville in the 7 a.m. newspaper
