22nd minute: Leverkusen is now a little better in the game. However, Alonso’s team has not yet taken the offensive. Because Atalanta is more aggressive, which is why Bayer cannot play their usual possession game.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen – Atalanta Bergamo 0:1

Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Kovar – Stanisic, Tah, Tapsoba, Hincapie – Xhaka, Palacios – Frimpong, Grimaldo – Adli, Wirtz
Atalanta Bergamo: Musso – Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac – Zappacosta, Ederson, Koopermeiners, Ruggeri – De Ketelaere, Scamacca, Lookman
Goals: 0:1 Lookman (12th)

17th minute: The Werkself seemed unfocused and unsteady in the early stages. Lots of bad passes and inaccuracies in the Bayer game. Now at least Leverkusen’s first goal. Stanisic takes a shot, but the shot is deflected and Musso can easily pick up the ball.

Alonso’s team is unstable – Atalanta scores with their first chance through Lookman

12th minute: Then the goal is scored – and it was obvious! Atalanta comes into the penalty area from the right via Zapacosta, who puts the ball back. Palacios loses sight of Lookman in the penalty area, so he can slide in to make it 1-0.

7th minute: De Ketelaere does this cleverly on the left against Hincapie and takes a free kick. However, it doesn’t bring in anything. Shortly afterwards, Hincapie blocks a header from Scamacca! That would have been very dangerous for Bavaria.

4th minute: First attack from Atalanta, but Scamacca cannot prevail against Hincapie and Tapsoba. Nervous start from both teams.

1st minute: The ball is rolling in Dublin! The final of the Europa League has kicked off.

+++ 8:55 p.m.: The teams come out of the tunnel. There is a phenomenal atmosphere in the stadium. The choreo, especially on the lawn, was really great. Now the players wait until it finally starts. It will happen soon!

+++ 8:37 p.m: “I’m definitely very nervous. I hope that we will win, but Atalanta is of course a very good team,” reveals Fernando Carro on RTL. Remarkable: Bergamo destroyed the EL dreams of Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC.

+++ 8.28 p.m.: What will be the tactics for the game today? “Good to play. With the ball, against the ball,” said Xabi Alonso on RTL: “We have to play intelligently, with a lot of control.” And how fit is Flo Wirtz? “Top fit!” We would have clarified that too.

+++ 8:17 p.m.: 21 years after the last Werkself final in Europe, Bayer Leverkusen is finally back in an international final. Back in 2002, it was Zinédine Zidane who destroyed the Werkself’s dreams. Can you still remember the dream goal?

Alonso puts DFB star on the bench in the EL final

+++ 8 p.m.: There is the Bayer Leverkusen lineup! In fact, Xabi Alonso puts the cup keeper in the goal. So Kovar starts, same as Stanisic. Somewhat surprisingly, Robert Andrich sits on the bench. But the DFB star was also in action more in the league. In the starting line-up: Florian Wirtz!

Wirtz question before the EL final: Alonso’s lineup surprise?

+++ 7:34 p.m.: In just under half an hour we will know how Xabi Alonso will solve the Wirtz problem. It would be surprising if the Werkself coach left the youngster out. A bruised thigh recently bothered him. But Wirtz should be used in a game like this.

+++ 6:42 p.m.: Great gesture from the Werkself, who invited all the 1988 UEFA Cup winners to tonight’s final in Dublin.

+++ 6:19 p.m.: The referee of the game is Istvan Kovacs from Romania. The 39-year-old refereed up to 21 games in the Europa League. In the Champions even one game more (22). So a very experienced man who is refereeing the game between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta Bergamo in Dublin this evening.

+++ 5:07 p.m.: A good 51,000 spectators will be in the stadium in Dublin today. Leverkusen has used up its quota of 12,000. “We will have a fantastic atmosphere – and perhaps also have a small advantage in the stands,” said Simon Rolfes.

Granit Xhaka is also looking forward to the game on Wednesday evening. “The fans were always there, whether at home or away, we need the support in the final, perhaps more than before,” said the Swiss: “We are trying to go beyond our limits and hope that we can celebrate with the fans afterwards .”

Europa League final live: Leverkusen against Atalanta – discussion about Wirtz

Munich/Dublin – It’s ready!

After winning the German championship for the first time, Bayer Leverkusen now wants to win internationally. In the final of the Europe League Atalanta Bergamo is waiting for Atalanta Bergamo on Wednesday evening in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (all TV information can be found here). The Italians should not be underestimated, even if they are “only” fifth in Serie A.

In the Coppa Italia, Gian Piero Gasparini’s team narrowly lost to Juventus (0-1) – so the boys from Lombardy can win the cup. Nevertheless, the Werkself will be well prepared, as they showed in the EL semi-finals that they can do well with Italian teams.

Before kick-off there was a bit of discussion about youngster Florian Wirtz. The national player, who is supposed to shine for the DFB team together with Jamal Musiala from FC Bayern at the 2024 European Championships, was recently injured. But now he should be fit again. But it is questionable where, how and whether coach Xabi Alonso will line up.

Shortly from the start of the EL final: Discussion about Flo Wirtz

Possibly as a false nine? Or in his usual position in the left attacking midfield in a classic Bayer 3-4-3? If that is the case, then either Patrick Schick or Victor Boniface would move into the center of the attack. You can be excited.

The Europa League final for Bayer Leverkusen against Atalanta Bergamo could only be an interim step on the way to the treble for the Werkself. Second division 1. FC Kaiserslautern awaits in the DFB Cup final next weekend.
