The tragic end of an unbearable drama. Last Wednesday, Shannon died. The schoolgirl succumbed to her injuries after three weeks in a coma. On March 6, the 13-year-old girl was hospitalized in serious condition after being raped in Rantigny (Oise). Since then, three people have been indicted.
What happened on March 6 in Rantigny?
On March 6, 2024, Shanon, a student at the Simone-Veil college in Cauffry, a few kilometers from Rantigny, went to visit a friend of the same age. The two young girls are then joined by two men aged 18 and 19. “The contact was a priori established via social networks, without us knowing at the moment who contacted who”, explains to 20 minutes Me Frédéric Le Bonnois, lawyer for Shanon’s family. According to the council, Shanon found herself alone with one of the boys and that’s when she was raped.
The friend discovers Shanon unconscious in a bedroom. The teenager has already lost a lot of blood and is in respiratory arrest. It was in this state that she was transported by firefighters to Amiens hospital. At the Amiens hospital, in a coma, the teenager is then kept alive by a respirator. She won’t wake up again.
Acts of torture?
In a press release, Loïc Abrial, the Senlis prosecutor indicates: “Injured following this attack, the victim was hospitalized in serious condition, with a life-threatening condition. » According to Me Frédéric Le Bonnois, “the investigation should make it possible to know the exact circumstances but we can already ask ourselves the question of acts of torture and barbarity. »
Indeed, according to the lawyer, Shanon had “a gaping wound in her vagina”. And the autopsy, carried out on Friday March 29, should shed light on suspicions of an act of barbarity. The results of this autopsy are expected this Tuesday at the end of the day or this Wednesday.
Where is the investigation?
“The justice system takes this matter very seriously,” adds Mr. Frédéric Le Bonnois. As proof, while the Beauvais public prosecutor’s office had opened a procedure for “rape of a minor by an adult”, it was transferred to the Senlis criminal center, under the control of an investigating judge.
In his press release, the Senlis prosecutor specifies that three people were arrested on March 19. The two men present on site and Shanon’s friend at whose house the events happened. “The alleged rapist was remanded in custody. His two co-indicted, suspected of voluntary abstention from preventing a crime, were left free, with an adult placed under judicial supervision and a minor placed under provisional judicial educational measure. None has a criminal record,” commented the prosecutor.
Since Shanon’s death, the judicial investigation has been reclassified as “rape leading to the death of the victim”. According to the family’s lawyer, the characterization of homicide would also be retained. The alleged rapist could face thirty years of criminal imprisonment.
Soon a white march?
The family, who confided this week to being in a “state of shock”, no longer wishes to react before Shanon’s funeral which is planned for April 9 in order to “protect themselves and breathe a little”, further indicates Mr. Frédéric Le Bonnois to 20 minutes. And to remember that Shanon had a twin brother.
Shanon’s relatives would, however, like to organize a white march “which will take place in the next two or three days”, adds the lawyer without being able to specify the exact date.
