“No need to add points in the middle of words,” says Emmanuel Macron

The French language “forges the nation”, Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, calling for “not to give in to the spirit of the times” by adding “points in the middle of words”, while a bill to ban inclusive writing is on the Senate’s agenda.

“In this language, the masculine makes the neuter. We do not need to add periods in the middle of words, or dashes or things to make it readable,” declared the Head of State on the occasion of the inauguration of the International City of the French language in Villers-Cotterêts (Aisne).

The text of Les Républicains senator Pascale Gruny plans to ban inclusive writing “in all cases where the legislator (and possibly the regulatory power) requires a document in French”.
