It wasn’t Uli Hoeneß’s fault – that’s what Ralf Rangnick emphasized a few days after his surprising rejection from FC Bayern. Rangnick has other things in mind.

Uli Hoeneß’s highly acclaimed appearance has, according to Ralf Rangnick had no influence on his rejection from FC Bayern Munich. “I have had a very friendly relationship with Uli Hoeneß for a long time,” Rangnick told “Kicker”. “Contrary to some media reports, his public statements had no influence on my decision to stay at the ÖFB.”

The 65-year-old prefers to remain as team manager of the Austrian national team rather than the coaching position at Säbener Straße. Rangnick announced this last week. Previously, master coach Xabi Alonso and national coach Julian Nagelsmann had already seen their professional future in Leverkusen and with the national team and not in Munich.

Rangnick: Full focus on EM

“I am the Austrian team boss with all my heart. This task gives me incredible joy and I am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path,” said Rangnick in a statement from the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB).

Hoeneß had confirmed at a panel discussion a week earlier that the Munich team only asked Rangnick after Alonso and Nagelsmann had turned them down. The honorary president also criticized the current coach Thomas Tuchel, who, in Hoeneß’ opinion, did not develop young players enough.

Ten Hag is considered a promising candidate

Rangnick now emphasized in “Kicker” that he was focusing solely on the European Championship and did not want any distraction from Bayern’s squad planning.

Who will be the new Munich coach remains the exciting question. Erik ten Hag from Manchester United is currently considered a promising candidate. The Dutchman was coach of the Bayern amateurs from 2013 to 2015.
