Munich today – News from May 5th, 2022 – Munich

A year ago, police officers were attacked by a large number of young people during a supposedly routine operation in the English Garden: There were insults, bottles were thrown, and there were injuries. That caused a stir at the time and a lot of outrage. Politicians and police representatives called for the fastest possible sanctions at the time. Just like the attacks themselves, the reactions also showed how tense the nerves were in spring 2021. Understandable, given all the impositions caused by the corona pandemic. A lot of emotions had obviously been building up, which turned into aggression and were just waiting for an opportunity to break out.

Now, a year later, the required consequences for the suspects are still a long time coming. Ideally, the investigation should have been quick and thorough. But it is not always possible to do both at the same time. In this case, those responsible have decided to prioritize thoroughness.

If the investigation of an act of violence takes a long time, this is a further burden for the victims – even if they are police officers. But careful investigations are preferable to any activism, as I received plausible explanations from all sides of the criminal prosecutors when researching my report. One saw a year ago what blind activism leads to: The young people didn’t spend long with the question of what the police operation in the English Garden was all about – namely a sexual offense against a 14-year-old girl, whose enlightenment probably nobody in their right mind would have wanted to prevent it. But the heated crowd suspected some kind of corona harassment from the police presence and just got started.

The fact that the events of that time were and are being determined in a prudent manner can also be seen as a good sign, as a sign of a certain relaxation. All corona restrictions have been lifted, so there is no longer any reason for aggression, nothing stands in the way of a peaceful summer.
