Of course, school is more than a place where children learn to do arithmetic, to write and to read. It is a place where they learn how to learn, where they practice moving and working within a group. They make friends, some even for life, and ideally discover talents and passions.
All of that was a little more possible this school year than in the previous two years. In the third school year, which was influenced by the corona pandemic, there were no ski camps at most schools, but trips to school camps and study trips finally took place again. There were summer festivals, theater performances and proms. Schools remained open and many principals I spoke to are cautiously positive about this school year.
Except for one topic that everyone sees critically: the shortage of teachers. And not just in elementary and middle schools, but also in junior high schools and high schools, when many teachers are sick or when a teacher becomes pregnant and is no longer allowed to teach at school because of Covid. The director of a Munich high school says that this is a situation that is not familiar. And money won’t help if you can’t find anyone on the market.
So there is still a lot to do in the area of schools – even if the holidays are just around the corner.
