The “Last Generation” is back. The climate activists have said goodbye to protesting using superglue; they no longer want to stick on streets to block them. The new means of demanding more climate protection should be measured disobedience. A first test of this strategy in Munich is announced for next Saturday, at Gärtnerplatz.
At eleven o’clock, climate activists should meet in front of the Feldherrnhalle with their bicycles, explains Ernst Hörmann from the “Last Generation”. From there we will cycle in a group to Gärtnerplatz, without posters or other things to express a political opinion. They don’t want to form a meeting yet, so they don’t want to use posters and the like. Rather, they want to drive as a “critical mass”. Such groups of cyclists are permitted according to the road traffic regulations: As soon as 16 or more people ride together on bikes, they have special rights in traffic. There is no need to register with an authority, says Hörmann.
At around twelve o’clock you want to meet at Gärtnerplatz with others who come there on foot. There, another group from the climate justice movement registered a meeting on the footpath. The cyclists of the “Last Generation” wanted to gather on the street and hold a rally with music, says Hörmann. With this strategy, supporters are given the choice: either be part of the registered demo on the footpath, or gather “disobediently” on the street. Everyone can decide for themselves how resistant they want to be.
“Away from fossil fuels, towards fairness”: That is the motto of the campaign on Saturday, says Hörmann. The “Last Generation” is pushing for climate policy to be fair so that people with little money do not suffer even more from the climate crisis. To achieve this, it is necessary to quickly phase out fossil energy. The warmer it gets, the more uncomfortable it becomes, especially for people who cannot afford a large apartment with a garden but rather live on a large street.
