The internships of students in vocational high schools will be paid, from the start of the 2023 school year. Traveling to Charente-Maritime, the president announced that he wanted to make vocational education “a national cause”.
Good news for high school students. Traveling this Thursday to Saintes (Charente-Maritime), Emmanuel Macron announced that from the start of the 2023 school year, students in professional streams will receive compensation when they do an internship.
“We must be able to guarantee quality internships. The students will be all the more motivated as a progressive internship allowance will be deployed (…) This commitment must be valued by the State”, judged the president .
Very concretely, students of CAP or second will receive 50 euros per week, 75 euros in the second year of CAP or first and finally 100 euros in terminal. This will make a maximum of 1200 euros per year and per student.
A very rare reward
Until now, these compulsory weeks of training in the workplace were not always paid.
At present, a gratuity is provided “when the duration of the internship within the same host organization is greater than two consecutive months.” But “it is extremely rare for vocational high school students to meet the duration condition” can we read on Éduscol, the national information and support portal for education professionals.
Students aiming for a CAP must complete 12 to 14 weeks of internship over two years, while young people wishing to validate a vocational baccalaureate must complete 18 to 22, spread over the three years of training.
More broadly, the state will invest an additional “one billion euros per year” for vocational high schools. Far from being “simply a reform”, Emmanuel Macron wants to make vocational education “a national cause”.
