How much and when? All about the new public transport fare increase

Inflation will not spare Toulouse public transport. Tisséo confirmed this Wednesday to prepare an “evolution” of its price range. Everything will not be voted on until July 6 during a union council, after a consultation phase, but we already know the essential points of this overall increase which will come into force from September 1, 2022.

2% per year

In general, elected officials will opt for a 2% increase for four years in titles and subscriptions, which should result in an increase of one euro per year on the “all public” subscription. “It is less than the expected inflation when we could have modeled ourselves on it, the effort is therefore significant”, specifies Sacha Briand, the elected official in charge of finance.

10 cents more for the single ticket

So as not to complicate payments with decimals of decimals, the famous unit ticket will take 10 cents at once in the fall to reach 1.80 euros (against 1.90 euros in Lyon for example) then will not move for four year.

New youth and senior rates

Free access for the most precarious will be maintained. But the emblematic youth and senior rates, which are very attractive, will not be spared. Only young scholarship holders aged 11 to 26 will keep a canon price of 11.30 euros (+ 50 cents) per month. The others will continue to pay a “solidarity” price, not yet known but which could reach 16 euros (compared to 15.10 euros in Grenoble or 34.40 euros in Bordeaux). “64% of young people under 26 are not affected by this pricing reform. For them, nothing changes,” assures Tisséo Collectivités.

Same rule applied to seniors or job seekers. Those who earn less than 1,300 euros net per month should pay 11.30 euros per month (+ 50 cents). Those whose income is between 1,300 and 2,600 euros net will drop from 16.20 euros to 16.70 euros in September. The bar will be for retirees (and the rare unemployed) who are well off in the upper category, with a price that could rise from 16.20 euros to 27.50 euros.

Elected officials are aware that this news comes in a “particular context” for purchasing power. “We remain globally on the lowest rates of the French networks”, underlines Jean-Michel Lattes the president of Tisséo Collectivités. “But the operating costs are also increasing and by definition the operation of a public transport network is loss-making. The more we develop, the more we widen the deficits and it is necessary to find a balance and not to drop out in terms of revenue, ”explains Sacha Briand. Especially in view of the financing of a third metro line at 2.8 billion euros.
