24 stars for Munich, plus another 64 more in the rest of Bavaria: The gourmet restaurants in Bavaria are again doing well in the new Michelin Guide for Germany. Especially in Munich. These are this year’s star kitchens.

Three stars straight away: Restaurant Jan

Three stars: Jan Hartwig40, has launched his new, own restaurant Jan, which only opened in October 2022, got three stars straight away. A sensational success that is very unusual in the Michelin Guide. On the other hand, Hartwig had already cooked three stars every year between 2017 and 2021 in the studio of the Bayerischer Hof.

Two stars defended: Atelier des Bayerischen Hofs

Here, too, big footsteps: Hartwig’s successor in the Studio of the Bavarian court was born in Freising Anton Gschwendtner, 38. He had previously shown what he can do in hotel restaurants in Vienna and Stuttgart, which he had helped to earn star honors. In Munich it has now become two stars for the second time.

Two stars: Restaurant Alois from the delicatessen Dallmayr

Top gastronomy: Max Natmessnig was named Chef of the Year 2022 by the Austrian Gault Millau. He has been head chef at the Dallmayr restaurant since October "Alois" in downtown Munich.

Immediately two stars also managed Max Natmessnig in the restaurant Alois of the delicatessen Dallmayr. Even before his new position as head chef in Munich (also since October), the 34-year-old was regarded as Austria’s greatest cooking talent and, according to the Michelin Guide testers, he also proved that at Alois.

Two stars: gourmet restaurant ESS in the BMW world

The gourmet restaurant in Munich has been decorated with two stars for the longest time dining room in the BMW world with his head chef Bobby Brewer, 61. Since 2015, the Michelin has awarded its clear product cuisine two stars. Bräuer is something of a rock of stability in Munich’s recently turbulent gastronomic scene.

Two stars: the Tantris

Followed in big footsteps Benjamin Chmura33, in tantris after its general renovation as the successor to Hans Haas, who had worked there for 23 years. But Chmura immediately managed to cook up two stars, which he has now received again. And his colleague Virginie Protat31, became head chef at sister restaurant Tantric DNA also awarded a star again this year.

Two stars: Tohru in writing

Consistently cooks at two-star level too Tohru Nakamura, 39, since 2017, when he received this award for the first time in Geisels Werneckhof. He now has his own gourmet restaurant Tohru in the writing room at the stove and implements his sophisticated Japanese-French crossover concept there.

One star: Brothers

This is new in the ranks of Munich’s top restaurants with one star brothers the twin brothers Tobias and Markus Klaas, who had previously worked as sommeliers and restaurant managers at Nakamura. They went into business for themselves last November; the chef now takes care of the kitchen Daniel Bodamer30, for the new star dignity, who has already worked for some of the big ones in his guild.

One Star: Mural Farmhouse

Quite unusual for Munich is the Nordic-inspired and strictly regional cuisine Rico Birndt29, in the restaurant Mural Farmhouse at the Hotel Miracle Locke. The offshoot of the Michelin-star restaurant Mural on Hotterstraße now also has a star in the Michelin Guide and will soon be opening its roof terrace, where Birndt and his team also grow vegetables and herbs for their own use.

This time without a star: Restaurant Schwarzreiter

Top gastronomy: The time was probably too short to convince the testers: Head chef Franz-Josef Unterlechner only started his job a few weeks ago in the Schwarzreiter restaurant at the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten.

But there are not only happy winners, but also unfortunate losers. That’s how it became Restaurant Schwarzreiter of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten had his star removed for this year: the new head chef Franz Josef Unterlechner, 37, started his new job just ten weeks ago – too short for the testers. On the other hand, one star was again awarded to: the Acquarello, the Gabelspiel, the Les Deux, the Mountain Hub Gourmet at the airport, the showroom by Dominik Käppeler, the Sparkling Bistro and the Werneckhof Sigi Schelling.

Who else got stars in Bavaria

In the rest of Bavaria, Christian Jürgens from the Überfahrt restaurant in Rottach-Egern am Tegernsee has gotten three stars for the tenth time in a row. His colleague Thomas Kellermann from the Dichter gourmet restaurant, also in Rottach-Egern, received two stars – as at his previous station, Wernberg Castle in the Upper Palatinate, where he was head chef until 2018 (as Jürgens’ successor, by the way). The Residenz Heinz Winkler suffered the biggest fall: After the death of the legendary chef last October, the Michelin downgraded the restaurant from two stars to zero. The Solo Du (Bischofswiesen), the Gourmet Restaurant im Karner (Frasdorf), the Tisane (Nuremberg), the Wachter Foodbar (Prien am Chiemsee) and the Gasthof Alex (Weißenbrunn) are all newly represented with a Michelin star.
