Grünwalder Stadium: Who will pour the lion in the future – Munich

The catering at the Grünwalder Stadium recently hit the headlines: The current caterer had problems with the power supply, and so there were much-discussed bottlenecks in beer serving at the kiosks at the home game of TSV 1860 Munich against SSV Ulm almost two weeks ago. The landlord Lorenz Stiftl then criticized the stadium’s dilapidated infrastructure. When asked, the city of Munich, as the stadium operator, said it was not aware of any technical problems.

Where exactly the responsibility lay will no longer be discussed until the end between the landlord, the stadium owner and the tenant Paulaner. As the SZ learned, the Munich restaurateur has lost the latest tender for catering at the Grünwalder Stadium. Stiftl will only be responsible for Sixty Munich, FC Bayern II and Türkgücü Munich until the end of the seasons. From July 1st, Jörg Diemb will take over. When asked, he confirmed that he had been awarded the contract last week. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” says the 52-year-old, who has been running a catering business with his wife Stefanie for decades.

The Grünwalder Stadium is new territory for Diemb from a business perspective. But firstly, the Munich native is no longer an amateur when it comes to stadium catering: He has been running the kiosks in the Unterhaching sports park since 2018, both at the games of the game association and at the Munich Ravens football events. From 2001 until football moved to the Fröttmaninger Arena, Diemb had also taken over the kiosks in the Olympic Stadium. Secondly, Diemb is “deep blue”, as he puts it himself, born in Harlaching and grew up in Giesing – which shouldn’t have been a disadvantage when it came to the tender.

The catering includes the VIP room between the main and east stands and a total of seven kiosks. Not everything has been clarified in detail yet; the question remains, for example, how large the food offering can and will be. But Diemb already knows one thing for sure, and thousands of stadium visitors will be happy to hear it: “Our beer price policy will be different” – so someone is actually announcing that they are going to lower the prices. Nowadays, many people don’t have that much in their wallets, he says, so as a landlord you have to “be a little humble.” In fact, research on relevant internet forums confirmed that the half in the Grünwalder Stadium is the most expensive in the entire third division at 5.50 euros. In addition, there will be an expanded and probably also discounted range of non-alcoholic drinks and sweets.

From the takeover at the beginning of July, Diemb and his team only have a month until the first, probably sold out sixty home game, as the third division starts the new season on August 2nd. Diemb explains that he has also heard about the electricity problems. “We will do everything we can to ensure that there are no more outages in the future,” he says. A new unit may be necessary for this. In any case, Diemb seems to bring enough new energy with him.
