From January 1, there will no longer be point deductions for “small” speeding violations.

Good news for drivers. Drivers checked for speeding less than five km/hour will no longer lose their license points from January 1, 2024, according to a government decree published Friday in Official newspaper.

These “small” speed violations, less than five km/h, are now punishable by a reduction of one point on the driving license and a fixed fine ranging from 68 to 135 euros. From January they will only be punished by fine.

The reduction of one license point will only apply for speeding between five km/h and 20 km/h.

This “common sense” measure was announced in April by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin. On the contrary, it was described as “nonsense” by the League Against Road Violence.

In 2020, of the 12.5 million tickets sent for speeding controlled by radars, 58% concerned excesses of less than five km/h, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

A total of 3,267 people died on the roads of mainland France in 2022, according to a consolidated report from Road Safety, a stable level (+0.7%) compared to 2019, the last reference year before the pandemic.
