EU – Ryanair versus Lufthansa – Economy

The low-cost airline Ryanair took the opposite position after Lufthansa’s criticism of the EU rules on take-off and landing rights (slots). The EU Commission should ignore “false claims” by Lufthansa about the need for empty ghost flights, explained Ryanair. The EU should instead force Lufthansa and other state-subsidized airlines to release slots that they did not want to use. “Ghostbusters” like Ryanair and other airlines could then offer these flights at lower ticket prices. However, Ryanair had announced that it would withdraw from Frankfurt Airport in the spring because of the fee increase. The background to this is the EU slot rules, which were relaxed during the pandemic because air traffic collapsed. The airlines have to use 50 percent of their slots.
