Elegant robes, hats and handbags: Numerous items of clothing that Princess Diana once wore are now to be auctioned.

Numerous gowns of Princess Diana (1961-1997) are to be auctioned in Los Angeles to be auctioned. These include several evening dresses that Diana wore in the late 1980s and could fetch several hundred thousand dollars each, said the auction house Julien’s, which presented the pieces at a preview on Wednesday at New York’s Carlyle Hotel in a suite where the Princess often stayed overnight.

The auction, scheduled for June 27, will also include shoes, handbags, hats and gloves that belonged to William and Harry’s mother. It is said to be one of the largest auctions of items that Diana once wore since her death in a car accident in 1997.

Princess Diana’s Travolta dress

It is not the first time that Princess Diana’s gowns have come under the hammer: in 2019, her legendary Travolta dress was auctioned for around 315,000 euros. The midnight blue, off-the-shoulder velvet dress was a real eye-catcher thanks to its V-neck and blue tulle underskirt.

Princess Diana spent an equally special evening in the dress: The then US President Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) and his First Lady Nancy (1921-2016) welcomed the royals to the White House and after dinner there was dancing. Lady Di was invited to dance by Ronald Reagan and the actors John Travolta, Tom Selleck and Clint Eastwood, among others. Since then it has been called the Travolta dress.
