The Full Monty is set to be revived as eight episode Disney+ TV series

The Full Monty is being revived as a Disney+ TV series, 25 years after the original film.

The British comedy was released in 1997 to critical acclaim. For a time it was the highest grossing film in the UK until it was later outsold by Titanic.

The film follows a group of unemployed men in Sheffield during the 1990s as they decide to form a male striptease act in an attempt to make some money.

Disney+ has now announced a new limited series based on the film and featuring the original cast members.

The cast includes Robert Carlyle as Gaz, Mark Addy as Dave, Lesley Sharp as Jean, Hugo Speer as Guy, Paul Barber as Horse, Steve Huison as Lomper, Wim Snape as Nathan and Tom Wilkinson as Gerald.

According to a press release, the series “will follow the original band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors.

‘The series will explore the brighter, sillier and more humane way forward where communal effort can still triumph over adversity.’

The new series will follow the original group of friends over eight episodes, as they navigate post-industrial Sheffield and the struggles faced by crumbling healthcare, education and employment systems.

It will also introduce a whole host of new cast members including children and grandchildren of the returning characters.

As The Full Monty is set to be rebooted after 25 years FEMAIL reveals where the stars of the unlikely male stripper hit are now – including an Oscar nominee, a trainee counsellor, and a painter

The cast of The Full Monty have reunited for a new original series of the same name, set to air on Disney+.

The British comedy was released in 1997 to critical acclaim and became a surprise hit, becoming the highest grossing film in the UK at the time.

The film follows a group of unemployed men in Sheffield during the 1990s as they decide to form a male striptease act in an attempt to make some money.

Almost 25 years on from the release of the Bafta award-winning film, Robert Carlyle will return as Gaz, Mark Addy as Dave, Lesley Sharp as Jean, Hugo Speer as Guy, Paul Barber as Horse, Steve Huison as Lomper, Wim Snape as Nathan and Tom Wilkinson as Gerald.

But where are the cheerful would-be Chippendales now?

The cast of The Full Monty have reunited for a new original series of the same name, set to air on Disney+. They are pictured in the original film in 1997

The new series will follow the original group of friends over eight episodes, as they navigate post-industrial Sheffield and the struggles faced by crumbling healthcare, education and employment systems.

In the 25 years since the film was released, the stars have split paths with some rubbing shoulders with Hollywood A-listers picking up Baftas and Oscar nominations, while others have pursued roles outside of acting including counselling and painting.

While some stars – including Robert Carlyle were household names before the film – it was a launching pad for many others who have gone on to star in British dramas, Hollywood films and more.

Here FEMAIL reveals where the original cast of the Full Monty are now…

ROBERT CARLYLE: GAZ

Already a big name thanks to Danny Boyle’s television series Hamish Macbeth and another Boyle production, Trainspotting, Robert Carlyle, now 60, took the lead role in The Full Monty, persuading his very cynical mates to try their hand at some Chippendale-style thrusts.

The movie kicked off a purple patch for the Glaswegian; roles in The Beach (also Danny Boyle), hit television show 24, and 28 Weeks Later followed.

More recently he’s been a regular in US show Once Upon a Time as Rumpelstiltskin and in 2017 starred in the Trainspotting sequel, T2.

He’s set to reprise his role as psychotic hard man Francis Begbie again next year a six-part television spin-off series based on Irvine Welsh’s 2016 book, The Blade Artist.

Teasing details of the project, Robert revealed that his character starts off the movie having just left HMP Edinburgh, where he served a 25-year prison sentence for his multitude of crimes.

Currently he’s starring in hit Sky One series Cobra as Robert Sutherland, the Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party.

In his 32-year career on the big and small screen he’s become known for his commitment to authenticity in roles, often losing or gaining weight and changing his lifestyle to fit a character including moving house to live where it is set.

He’s kept a relatively quiet private life. In 1997 he married make-up artist Anastasia Shirley, with whom he shares a daughter and two sons.
