Driving instructor shares genius technique to reverse into parking space perfectly

A driving instructor has shared a handy tip to help drivers nail reverse parking.

Reverse parking into a bay is a regular challenge for drivers, and can also be part of a driving test, so it’s important to know how to get it right.

Theory test app The Complete Theory Test have posted a super useful video on TikTok to help new drivers – and any qualified drivers who might need to refresh their skills.

In a viral TikTok video, an expert demonstrates a useful car reversing technique.

First, he positions the car and engages the reverse gear, making sure the warning light is visible to cars behind.

Prior to reversing, he checks around the vehicle to ensure there are no obstacles or people in the way.

The expert then introduces his “reference point” stickers, which he places on his door, roughly aligned with the door handles.

Here’s how the technique works: When attempting to reverse park, drivers should align the reference point stickers with the white lines of the bay on the road.

After another safety check, the expert begins reversing while steering fully to the left, known as a full lock.

During the reversing process, continuous monitoring of mirrors and blind spots is essential.

Once the vehicle is properly aligned with the white lines of the bay, the driver should straighten the wheels and continue reversing while keeping an eye on the rear.

As the car nears the desired position, it’s crucial to check the back and side windows to ensure a safe distance from the curb.

The expert also utilises a reference point in the back window, behind his right shoulder, to gauge the perfect distance from the curb.

The video advises to stop reversing when the driver sees the curb aligning with his door handle.

While the expert suggests using stickers initially, he assures that with practice, the reference points are easy to memorise over time.

The video is clearly helping drivers, amassing 400,000 views on the app.

Plenty of other drivers shared their suggestions in the comment section too.

One person said: “I use my shoulder and line it with the middle of a bay and then turn the wheel right around and park, works every time.”

Another added: “I use the passenger door opener as reference.”
