Cafés in Munich: The A Little Lost at the main train station in the test – Munich

It almost feels like stepping onto a film set. The A Little Lost at the main station is lovingly and very special. The guests sit at old school desks in the niches of the window fronts, which let light into the corner café from both sides. Child-sized chairs are pushed up to the school desks. Plants on it, next to it, hanging from the ceiling, on which the rays of the clear morning sun fall.

A pillar is painted pink and a black rotary telephone hangs from it. The walls are a few tones lighter than chalkboard green, and books are piled up on a bench like an invitation to immerse yourself in a novel instead of taking your smartphone out of your pocket, as is often the case.

The design is almost sentimental. It takes guests back to their own childhood or one they know from films or books and creates a homely feeling of security.

So no one who comes to the café near the main train station has to feel a little lost. A backpack and a suitcase in front of one of the tables suggest that one or two visitors to Munich see the nice restaurant as an opportunity to arrive in the city.

What is there and how much does it cost?

In addition to the green wall itself, from which the bare concrete peeks out here and there and highlights a few framed plant drawings, the hot drinks written in large letters behind the counter are an eye-catcher. Espresso 1.80 euros, cappuccino 3.60 euros, latte 4.50, flat white 4.50, chai 4.80 euros, orange juice 4.50 euros, cocoa 4 euros.

As in A Little Lost’s big sister, the Lost Weekend on Schellingstrasse, all drinks and food are vegan. The restaurant’s animal-friendliness is also reflected, for example, in the free treats offered for dogs.

The coffee specialties at Marzocco are traditionally prepared with soy milk. If you want oat milk or coconut milk, you pay 30 cents extra. A cappuccino with coconut milk is a nice change from the usual thanks to the slightly sweet note.

The menu is framed in gold on the school desks: The very good and filling “Coconut Berry Overnight Oats” (5.90 euros) are made with soy yogurt and are served nicely presented in a screw-top glass on a bright blue plate, with a few blueberries cuddle together on top of the oats, more berries scattered throughout the flakes.

Something different and also very good is the breakfast burrito (8.50 euros) with tofu scramble, beans, avocado, tomato and caramelized onions, nice for a heartier start to the day. This would also work with the “Cheesy Avo Panini”, which is prepared with vegan mozzarella and homemade avocado mayonnaise (6.90 euros), or with the hummus bagel (5.90 euros).

Of course, all sorts of pastries should not be missing, which are presented appetizingly in the display case at the front of the counter and are waiting to be seen, bought and eaten: the chocolate chip cookies, cakes, for example one with banana and salted caramel for 3.80 Euro each, banana bread (3.80 euros), croissants with apricot filling (3.20 euros) and without (2.80 euros). The offerings in the showcase change daily.

Who goes there and how long do you stay?

The A Little Lost is somewhat hidden near the main train station on Lämmerstrasse. It will still be found. The audience is students or already in the middle of their professional lives, friends hug each other when they meet again, a backpacker treats himself to a welcome coffee. Soft music and the whirring of the coffee machine provide the sound, the atmosphere is relaxed. Maybe there’s still enough time to order a second cappuccino and browse through the stack of books. And to reminisce nostalgically about your elementary school days.
