Café Barista Sistar in Obergiesing: Local ingredients meet global influences – Munich

Vegan cakes, good coffee and a variety of sandwiches: In Obergiesing there is breakfast again in the former “Shotgun Sister”. With a new name, new management and a different concept, the “Barista Sistar” has been offering friendly (self-)service since July 2022, daily changing lunch dishes and the promise of being able to spend a happy “me time” there.

The walls are mint green, matching the cushions. Some plants hang from the ceiling; and the bright retro wooden chairs are reminiscent of school days. Opposite them are simple tables and wooden benches covered with imitation sheepskin. There are dried flowers on the tables and a sign asking you to order at the counter and leave your laptop in your bag.

In fact, no one is typing in the café, the guests are talking or are engrossed in their mobile phones. A small outdoor area is set up in front of the large windows, which is well received on a warm morning.

It is ordered both inside and outside to drink here and to take away – there is a smile from the service. Some of the guests are regulars, says managing director Julia Strasser, but the crowd is very mixed on the weekends. Young and old come together in the restaurant, different languages can be heard. There is also a good mix on the menu. It’s “glocal” because the café relies on local ingredients and global culinary influences.

There is a good selection of pastries at the green counter: pretzels, croissants, various cakes and walnut bread. There is something for every diet – gluten-free, sugar-free, vegan. Or quite conventional.

Spoiled for choice: croissants, pretzels, cake or raw cake?

What is there and how much does it cost?

Vegans will find vegan croissants, pretzels with vegan cream cheese and chives or Bircher muesli with fresh fruit and granola (5.90 euros). Guests can choose between the coffee classics roasted in-house and chai tea (warm and cold), lemonades, eight to ten different cakes and “raw cakes” as well as sandwiches. The cakes are homemade, the sugar-free “raw cakes” are delivered.

Among the “Special Drinks” the espresso tonic stands out – mixed from tonic water and espresso (4.80 euros). That should be refreshing, especially in summer. If you prefer a more traditional style, you can get a cappuccino (3.50 euros) in a small porcelain cup with a latte-style chocolate heart. The in-house espresso beans “Intara” are roasted especially for the café.

Brunch is available on Saturdays until 1 p.m. to quench hunger – with a variety of sandwiches. This time, an avocado toast with lettuce (9.80 euros) and optionally with a poached egg (plus one euro) and salmon (plus three euros) will be offered. Fresh, visually appealing and filling. They meant well with the balsamic vinegar. But that is offset by the perfectly soft egg, salmon and fresh salad.

The menu also offers daily changing lunch dishes, at least once or twice a week also vegan. For example, there is a vegan pointed cabbage stew, a vegetarian vegetable curry or an African peanut ragout with beef.

You can make yourself comfortable with your favorite drink on the cushions – or would you rather sit on one of the bar stools on the wall? Despite the small shop area, the room is airy. The relaxed pop music stays in the background, neither conversations nor a relaxed breakfast are disturbed by it.
