Bingo at a motorway rest area, customs discover more than a ton of cannabis

We could almost call it the cannabis highway as the customs services regularly seize narcotics. This time, bingo for state agents. More than 1.3 tonnes of cannabis was seized on the A39 motorway in a truck registered in Germany, coming from Spain, the Lons-le-Saunier public prosecutor’s office said on Friday. According to Progress, this is a record cannabis seizure for the Jura department. The previous largest seizure by Jura customs officers dates back to March 2023 with 1.2 tonnes of cannabis pollen.

It was by chance and well inspired that customs officers and an anti-narcotics dog checked on Tuesday, at the Arlay rest area (Jura), the heavy goods vehicle driven by a Romanian driver. It was the canine who alerted his owners and led to a thorough search of the truck, where the agents ended up discovering the problem. Or 1.27 tonnes of cannabis pollen and 73 kg of packaged cannabis resin, hidden under a load of wood, prosecutor Julie Fergane told AFP. All for a value “of the merchandise estimated at more than 13 million euros on the illicit narcotics market”, noted the Besançon Regional Customs Directorate in a press release.
