Actor Ulrich Matthes (62) has been honored with a Cross of Merit. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier paid tribute to him on Tuesday at Bellevue Palace as a committed citizen and wonderful, always moving and surprising actor. Among the guests was former Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel and Matthes have known each other for a long time. You often talked about theater productions, like Matthes in the anthology “The high art of politics. The Angela Merkel Era». The CDU politician has rarely appeared in public recently.
Matthes is part of the ensemble of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, but is also always in front of the camera. Most recently, he was seen in the historical thriller “Munich – In the Face of War” on the Netflix streaming service. He also headed the German Film Academy for three years. Matthes thanked him for the honor and in his speech also recalled the Russian war of aggression in the Ukraine.
