With the Occitanie Rail Tour, the region invents the “road-trip” by TER

A road trip in the train, you say? The Occitanie region is launching theOccitania Rail Tour, a device that allows backpackers at heart to embark on a tourist trip, by TER, from the gorges of the Allier to the beaches of Roussillon. For ten euros each day, travelers have the possibility of unlimited use of the 19 regional railway lines, for two to six days, to discover Occitania differently.

And if that’s not enough to reach the abbey or museum you’ve been dreaming of visiting, with this pass, it’s also possible to board regional SNCF coaches. The yellow train, the famous TER which crosses the Pyrenees, is also accessible.

A road trip cheap and eco-friendly

“At a time when tourism is criticized for its excesses, the Regional Committee for Tourism and Leisure (CRTL) returns, with this device, to the origins of pleasure travel, as it was practiced in the 19th century”, explains Jean Pinard, the director of this regional body. The Occitanie Rail Tour is “an initiatory and positive journey, adapted to current tastes, and whose price and ease of use make it accessible to all”, he continues.

It is also a way, notes Carole Delga (PS), the president of the region, to “fight against house arrest and allow as many people as possible to enjoy leisure or go on vacation”, at a lower cost. . “It is essential when you know that more than a third of French people do not go on vacation each year”, confides the elected official.

The Occitanie Rail Tour also has the advantage of offering a trip, leaving a much smaller carbon footprint than when traveling through the region by car. Thanks to this device, it is possible, indicates the community, to make a complete tour of Occitania in five days, visiting Lourdes, Nîmes, the Pyrenees, and the Dordogne valley. But before setting off on an adventure, with your bag on your back, you have to get organized: a dedicated website allows you to set up your road trip before boarding the train.
