Winter is finally knocking at the door after a mild month of December

Of course it rarely snows at Christmas, but the temperatures at the end of December were still particularly mild. Lovers of the cold will finally be able to look forward to bringing out their mittens, hats and scarves with the arrival of more wintry temperatures on Friday. “There will be a gradual drop in temperatures which will begin tomorrow,” promises Patrick Galois, forecaster at Météo France, interviewed by France Info.

If Friday will still remain above seasonal norms, we will enter winter on Saturday then from Sunday, temperatures will drop “below normal”, warns the forecaster. But especially from Monday, and for three days, we can expect bitter cold over a large part of the country. “That could then change at the end of the week, since the anticyclone should move away towards the Atlantic,” specifies Patrick Galois.

A change of scenery

This drop in temperatures is explained, according to the specialist, by “a colder continental flow from the North then from the East” and “air masses coming from the polar regions”. All with “a north-east wind, which is sometimes called the north wind, which will have the effect of reinforcing the feeling of cold, especially north of the Loire”, he adds.

In the context of a much milder winter than normal, having low temperatures at this time of year can be a little reassuring. Especially since 2023 is already considered the hottest year in history by the European Copernicus observatory. So we’ll get some fresh air in this overheating world.
