Why theater is important in times of crisis – culture

Society is in crisis, the divisions are deep. Right now we urgently need a theater that takes a stand and disturbs the quiet.

The task of art is to bring chaos into order, the philosopher Theodor W. Adorno wrote in the middle of the last century. Back then it was about making the traditional norms of a static society dance. But what does it look like today, when hardly anything seems to be okay? Quite a few are currently hoping for orientation and clarity from cultural institutions and the arts. But as understandable as this desire may be, it misses what the arts can and should achieve if we trust their freedom.
