Who was Alexandra Sonac, the farmer who died in Ariège?

“All our farmers are in mourning. » These are the words shared by Gabriel Attal, the Prime Minister, concerning the tragedy that occurred at an agricultural dam, on the RN20, near Pamiers, in Ariège. Alexandra Sonac, 36, was hit by a vehicle while standing near a wall of straw bales with one of her daughters, Camille, and her husband. The two women did not survive. Her husband is seriously injured and still hospitalized.

A passionate woman

Originally from Marseille, Alexandra Sonac was born on June 6, 1987. From a very young age, she was interested in the world of agriculture. She joined the agricultural high school of Pamiers, from her second year, in order to continue in this field. After a BEP, a professional Baccalaureate and a BTS, she decided to permanently build her life in Ariège, in Saint-Félix-de-Tournegat.

In Ariège, Alexandra Sonac was well known to her colleagues, but also to the inhabitants of her village, being part of the town’s municipal council. Also very involved in the defense of farmers’ rights, the young woman was a member of the Young Farmers, one of the main unions behind the current protest movement.

A connected farmer

In 2016, having become the mother of two daughters, Alexandra moved to the Gaec de Lescure. She and her husband then devoted themselves to cattle breeding and corn production. The close-knit couple thrives in their daily work. “Our quality of daily life, being in constant contact with nature and experiencing magnificent seasons in this territory, is a real reward despite the difficulties,” she confided througha portrait produced by the newspaper Lands of Ariège in 2021.
