Lower Saxony’s new and old Prime Minister is Stephan Weil. At the constitutive session of the state parliament, a clear majority of the deputies voted for the SPD politician. It is his third term.
Weil has ruled the country since 2013. Red-Green was his first government alliance – and it is again now. In between, Weil had led a grand coalition as prime minister. He received 82 of the 145 votes cast today – and thus a clear majority. Weil secured a vote from the opposition camp. 74 votes would have been necessary for his re-election. The prime minister accepted the election and then appointed his cabinet.
Weil gives government statement in the afternoon
At around 4 p.m. this afternoon, Weil will make his first government statement as re-elected prime minister. The debate on this is on the agenda for Wednesday.
