Fan representatives and the police warn of deaths in football stadiums in view of the recent riots. Sig Zelt, spokesman for the Pro Fans association, on possible solutions to de-escalation – and why collective punishment is devastating.

There have been repeated riots recently when fans of German clubs were on a European tour: at the Champions League game of Eintracht Frankfurt in Marseille, at the Conference League game of 1. FC Köln in Nice, in the Europa League when visiting Union Berlin in Malmo. Sig Zelt is a supporter of Union and spokesman for the ultra-affiliated fan group Pro Fans; he describes himself as a “unionist for football fans”. He talks about the outbreaks of violence in the curves – and the mistakes of the associations and authorities.
