“Vegan grenades” and “biodegradable missiles”, watch out for this deepfake by Greta Thunberg

A video showing an interview with environmental activist Greta Thunberg on the BBC has been circulating on social networks for several days, in the context of the war between Hamas and Israel. We hear the young woman pleading for the use of more ecological weapons, in particular “vegan grenades” or “sustainable tanks and weapons”.

“If we want to continue fighting battles as environmentally conscious human beings, we need to move to sustainable tanks and weapons. There are many new concepts for our battery-powered fighter jets capable of carrying many more missiles. Biodegradable missiles, of course. […] If you use hand grenades, use vegan grenades,” we can hear in English.

FAKE OFF

Greta Thunberg never said these words. The video is a deepfake, that is to say a video diverted from its original message using artificial intelligence. A reverse image search allows you to go back to the source of the image. original videopublished on November 1, 2022 on the BBC YouTube channel.

The Swedish environmental activist was invited on the program “The One Show” to talk about her new book The Climate Book. In the real sequence from which the fake video came, Greta Thunberg explains the beginnings of her commitment to ecology, which led her to become vegan or even to stop flying.

Another clue that allows you to spot that the video is diverted from its original context is the “@Snicklink SATIRE” logo, at the bottom right of the modified video. The @Snicklink account describes itself on X (Twitter) as a “Conspidian”, that is to say a “conspiracy comedian”.

The video was posted on her account on October 20, with the caption: “Greta Thunberg on “Vegan Wars””, and the hashtags “#satire #israel”.
