With a visit to Ukraine, former US Vice President Mike Pence is clearly supporting the country under attack. In doing so, he also made his position in the competition for the US Republican presidential candidacy for the 2024 election clear. “It’s critical that America continues to lead on the world stage. That we confront the naked aggression that we’ve seen here,” the 64-year-old said in an interview with an NBC journalist, according to the US transmitter in the town of Moschchun, not far from Kiev.
“The war here in Ukraine is not our war, but freedom is our fight,” Pence said. Supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russia is in the national interest of the United States.
In addition to NBC, CNN also reported that Pence met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kiev. He also visited Bucha and Irpin. NBC released photos of the Republican speaking to local residents in Irpin and how he laid flowers.
“I believe that America is the leader of the free world,” Pence said, according to NBC News. “But to come here as a private citizen – and to see firsthand the heroism of the Ukrainian soldiers holding the fort in these forests, to see the heroism of the people here in Irpin holding back the Russian army, to see families whose houses literally came under fire in the midst of a ruthless and unprovoked Russian invasion – only strengthens my determination to do my part and continue to call for strong American support for our Ukrainian friends and allies.”
