The season finale will take place on Whit Monday. After that, “Tatort” fans will have to go without any new crime novels for around three months. Sport is the reason.

He’s never done it so early: The popular ARD crime series “Tatort” is going into its summer break in just a few days. On Whit Monday (May 20th) comes the Black Forest crime thriller “Tatort: Last Excursion Schauinsland” from SWR (Südwestrundfunk) – with Eva Löbau and Hans-Jochen Wagner – the last new case for the time being Then there will be no first broadcast in sight for three months.

The last time the “Tatort” went on summer break was in May twelve years ago. Last year it was on June 18th, two years ago on June 26th and three years ago on June 6th.

European Football Championships and Olympic Games

“No first broadcasts are planned on the Sunday crime slot during the European Football Championship and the Summer Olympics,” the ARD program directorate in Munich told the German Press Agency. The two major sporting events will be the reason for the slightly longer summer break in 2024. The European Championships run from June 14th to July 14th, the Olympics in Paris from July 26th to August 11th.

According to ARD program planners, it has not yet been finally clarified how long the summer break for Germany’s most popular TV series will last this year. But it will probably take until August 18th before a new “crime scene” is included in the program of the first. This would mean the break would be 13 weeks long, which it has only been twice so far – in 2020 and 2012. Last year it lasted eleven weeks, two years ago ten weeks.

After the last “crime scene” before the summer break, there will be a new Munich “police call” from BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk) on May 26, 2024. The crime thriller “Polizeiruf 110: Funkensommer” is the second crime thriller with Johanna Wokalek as investigator Cris Blohm.

The “Tatort” summer break, during which “Tatort” repeats are shown on Sundays at 8:15 p.m. instead of fresh crime stories in the summer, has only gradually become established. There have been regular repeats in the summer since 1996. Since 2003, the number of repeats in the summer has increased, but was often interrupted by first broadcasts (including “Polizeiruf 110”). The first continuous “Tatort” summer break on the first was in 2007 and then again from 2010.

The ARD series “Tatort” has been around since 1970 (in the Federal Republic) and the crime series “Polizeiruf 110” since 1971 (initially as a GDR production).
