The Christmas holidays have begun, the festival is just around the corner. Many make their way to their families or on vacation. The ADAC expects a particularly large amount of travel in long traffic jams today.
In the afternoon in particular, the roads will reach their capacity limits because travel and commuter traffic come together – at least that’s what the experts at the General German Automobile Club (ADAC) expect. An ADAC spokeswoman said there would be traffic jams and obstructions, especially where construction was going on. If you can, you should drive “anti-cyclically” – that is, start early in the morning, she advises.
On December 26, streets get crowded
On Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, the ADAC expects a quiet situation on the trunk roads – although some winter holidaymakers are already heading to the ski areas. The situation is completely different on Boxing Day, when many Christmas holidaymakers return home from visiting relatives and families. However, the volume of traffic will not be as heavy here as it was at the beginning of the Christmas weekend.
The most important traffic jams in the north
There is a risk of traffic jams on these motorways during the Christmas holidays:
- A1 Cologne – Dortmund – Bremen – Hamburg
- A2 Dortmund – Hanover – Braunschweig – Berlin
- A7 Hamburg – Hanover and Würzburg – Füssen/Reutte
- A9 Munich – Nuremberg – Berlin
- A10 Berlin Ring
- A24 Hamburg – Berlin
Construction site situation more relaxed than in summer
With regard to motorway construction sites, the situation at the end of the year was somewhat more relaxed than in the summer, according to the automobile club. The Autobahn 7 between Hanover and Hamburg is free again, there are no longer any construction sites there. However, there are still many bottlenecks, especially on the A1 between Osnabrück and Bremen and the A7 south of Hanover. In addition, massive road damage on the A20 near Lübeck is causing traffic obstructions. Between Lübeck-Genin and the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the road surface has ruptured for around ten kilometers.
