Maybe it was the blinding sun, maybe it was the fog. Within a short space of time, dozens of cars piled up and into one another on Autobahn 81 near Untergruppenbach. There are injuries and long traffic jams.
Yesterday afternoon, 85 vehicles collided at 17 different accident sites. 36 people were slightly injured. According to police, more than 100 people were involved in the accidents. In addition to those directly affected, other vehicle occupants who were stuck in the traffic jam, which was sometimes more than 20 kilometers long, were taken by bus to Untergruppenbach and looked after in a hall.
Even hours later, the police were unable to say with certainty why the accidents occurred. A spokeswoman said in the afternoon that it could have been due to the weather.
