Tour de France – 5th stage live today in the ticker: First endurance test for Pogacar and Vingegaard – mountain stage

In the Basque Country, the riders in the peloton have already pedaled up a few climbs, but the first difficult mountain stage in the Pyrenees starts today, Wednesday.

The time gaps in the general classification will widen and the face of the race will change. Experts assume that Adam Yates will give up the yellow jersey after four days.

The cycling fans are looking forward to the duel between the top favorites Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard from Team Jumbo-Visma. Are they making their first attempt today to slip into the yellow jersey in Laruns, or will an outsider take the overall lead after the first mountain stage?

3:09 p.m. – Gruppetto forms

At the end of the main field, some sprinters say goodbye and with five men from Soudal, so enough helpers around Fabio Jakobsen, the gruppetto is formed. They still have almost 90 kilometers to their destination.

15:03 – Pedersen falls behind

Campenaerts and van Aert continue alone because Pedersen now falls back towards the chasing group. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal – Quick-Step) is currently setting the pace there – 20 seconds behind the leaders. The peloton is 2:50 minutes behind the Belgian duo.

2:55 p.m. – Now it’s uphill

The very unrhythmic ascent to the Col de Soudet begins for the three front runners. 15.2 kilometers at 7.2 percent on average – in between always steeper and flatter in stages. Van Aert, Campenaerts and Pedersen are 1:03 ahead of the large chasing group and 2:42 ahead of the field.

2:45 p.m. – Madouas blasts the group

Valentin Madouas (Groupama – FDJ) uses a wave for a hard attack and the 33-man group stretches out, but ultimately stays together. Now Remi Cavagna (Soudal – Quick-Step) is helping Konrad again with the leadership work. The 33 men are 1:05 behind Van Aert, Pedersen and Campenaerts and 1:35 ahead of the peloton. 96 kilometers to go.

2:40 p.m. – Konrad does the work in the chasing field

Patrick Konrad works hard for Emanuel Buchmann and Jai Hindley. The Austrian has been leading the large 33-man group all alone for a few kilometers and is fighting alone against three leaders in front and Matteo Trentin and Vegard Stake Laengen from the UAE team in the peloton. Accordingly, the gap to the front grows and the lead to the rear melts. Why don’t AG2R and Soudal – Quick-Step, who are also three in the group, help out? Only they know that!

2:31pm – 15km to go to the bottom of the Col de Soudet

Coquard dropped back into the big group after the intermediate sprint, but Campenaerts, van Aert and Pedersen continue to pull through. The trio is half a minute ahead of the 33 pursuers and 2:40 minutes ahead of the peloton. There are still 15 kilometers to go before the 15.2 kilometer long climb to the Col de Soudet (honorary category mountain prize) with an average gradient of 7.2 percent begins.

2:24 p.m. – Coquard takes the 20 points ahead of Pedersen

Coquard wins the intermediate sprint after 49 kilometers ahead of Pedersen. Van Aert and Campenaerts don’t sprint with them, but simply take third and fourth place with them. What’s happening now? Is the quartet waiting for the group 15 seconds behind? By the way, the peloton is already 2:20 minutes behind.

2:18 p.m. – Attacks in the leading group before the intermediate sprint

Now the attack is on again and four men break away: Wout van Aert (Jumbo – Visma), Mads Pedersen (Lidl – Trek), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto – Dstny) have broken away – waiting in four kilometers the intermediate sprint with points for the green jersey.

2:15 p.m. – The 36 leaders

Here are the names of all the riders in the first group: Benoot, Laporte, van Aert (Jumbo – Visma), Großschartner, Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Fraile, Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), Madouas (Groupama – FDJ), Chaves, Uran (EF Education – EasyPost), Alaphilippe, Asgreen, Cavagna (Soudal – Quick-Step), Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Hindley, Buchmann, Konrad (Bora – hansgrohe), Ciccone, Lopez, Pedersen (Lidl – Trek), Berthet, Gall, Paret-Peintre (AG2R – Citroen), Coquard (Cofidis), Jorgenson, Mühlberger (Movistar), Hamilton (DSM – firmenich), Houle, Neilands (Israel – Premier Tech), Juul-Jensen (Jayco – AlUla), Delaplace (Arkéa – Samsic), Campenaerts, van Gils (Lotto – Dstny), Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan), Traeen (Uno-X), Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies).

2:10 p.m. – 1:20 minutes for the leading group

The front of the race is going full throttle and in the peloton only UAE Team Emirates is still working for Tadej Pogacar. Hindley and Ciccone, of course you don’t want to let them get too far away.

2:01 pm – 36 men at the top

A huge group has now formed after a hectic phase and has a lead of just over half a minute. Among others, Emanuel Buchmann and Jai Hindley (both Bora – hansgrohe), Wout van Aert (Jumbo – Visma) and Mads Pedersen as well as Giulio Ciccone (both Lidl – Trek) will be there. There were a lot of strong drivers – but Hindley and Ciccone were probably the most dangerous in terms of the overall standings. In the peloton, UAE Team Emirates sets the pace.

1:56 p.m. – Sprinter Gruppetto forms

Relief for Jakobsen: The Dutchman is more than a minute behind, but now other sprinters are also losing touch with the field: Mark Cavendish with three Astana helpers, Phil Bauhaus, Sam Welsford – that smells like a very early gruppetto, and too Morkov and Jakobsen could certainly catch up with that. Incidentally, behind the Soudal duo is Sören Waerenskjold (Uno-X), who also fell yesterday.

1:53 p.m. – 20 men in front, but Pogacar is chasing

Around 20 men have broken away, but now Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) also attacks from the field of pursuers – and shortly afterwards everything is together again.

1:52 p.m. – Jakobsen back on – and off again

Morkov brought Jakobsen back to the peloton, but now things are looking up again – and immediately it’s back to the back for the two.

1:48pm – Latour caught, Alaphilippe tries

Latour is back in the field and the next group is trying to break away. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal – Quick-Step) is there, Rigoberto Uran (EF Education – EasyPost) is there – and Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) is jumping again.

1:43 p.m. – Jakobsen in the convoy

Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal – Quick-Step), who fell yesterday, has a brutally difficult day ahead of him today. Already, after 15 kilometers, the Dutchman is in the convoy of escort vehicles and is fighting to catch up. The fast start hurts him badly. Michael Morkov, his sprint starter, is at his side and helps.

1:40 p.m. – Stop & Go in the peloton

Latour now has a 20-second lead because he drives at an even pace. In the peloton, on the other hand, they keep attacking, then following up and then briefly hesitating again. That helps the French at the top. But he certainly won’t remain the sole outlier today.

1:30pm – Latour alone in front

Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) has now pulled away alone and gained a five-second lead. It’s quiet again in the peloton for a moment. But it won’t stay that way for long – I promise!

1:25 p.m. – Start free and full throttle!

A completely different picture than the day before: the second Christian Prudhomme lowered the starting flag, the first drivers attacked – including Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty). We’re expecting a very hectic start because a lot of drivers want to be in the breakaway today.

1:20pm – Criss-crossing Pau

The peloton rolls neutralized through downtown Pau and then makes its way out towards the Pyrenees. Kilometer 0 and thus the sharp start will be reached at 1:25 p.m.

1:05 p.m. – Start free for neutralization

The giants of the Pyrenees can already be seen on the horizon. And now yellow jersey wearer Adam Yates of UAE Team Emirates & Co. is on the road bike in neutralization. 1930 was the first stage arrival in Pau. Alfredo Binda was able to decide this for himself at the time. Wout van Aert does not have the best memories of Pau. The Belgian sustained a laceration in the 2019 time trial after getting caught in a safety gate.

Tour de France: calm before the storm

we are at discovery+ already on the air. However, the peloton has not yet started to neutralize. Our commentator Karsten Migels and the experts Bernhard Eisel and Jens Voigt are on the Eurosport microphone again today.

Tour route: This is the 5th stage

The start is today – after 20 minutes of neutralization – at 1:25 p.m., the drivers are expected to finish between 5:21 p.m. and 5:51 p.m. We are in the live ticker right from the start. We present you the profile of today’s 5th stage in the video:

Tour route, stage 5: First mountain stage in the Pyrenees

Tour de France in the live ticker: Attack!

The stage lends itself to a breakaway of mountain-savvy riders, which will no doubt include man in the polka-dot jersey, Neilson Powless (EF Education First – Easy Post). It is quite possible that the contenders for the overall victory even let the breakaways go so far that the yellow bib changes hands. But the course of the race has to show that. With some certainty, the two best mountaineers to date will also be put to the test again: Tadej Pogacar (UAE – Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma). Everything else about the tour can be found here.

Tour de France live: Stage 5

Welcome to the live ticker for the 5th stage of the Tour de France. The 162.7 kilometer long 5th stage takes the race to the Pyrenees. After 70 flat kilometers, the climb begins with an ascent in the HC category: the 15.2-kilometer long and on average 7.2 percent steep Col de Soudet, whose uneven gradient and rough road surface make things all the more difficult. Riders can then rest on the descent and a flat section before a Category 3 mountain gets in the way. At kilometer 144.2 the race reaches the Col de Marie Blanque (1st category), which with a length of 7.7 kilometers and a gradient of 8.6 percent is not a giant, but many drivers fear the steep ramps on the dull surface, especially in the second half.
