Toni Schumacher: The former world-class goalkeeper about his career

The Rhinelander was one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the 1980s. His foul against Frenchman Patrick Battiston still sticks with him today, as does his controversial biography “Anpfiff”. Still, he says, “I don’t regret anything.”

Interview: Ulrike von Bülow

Mr. Schumacher, the mustache that you wore in the 80s is very popular again today. Are you happy about that?

Clear! But today I have a kind of five-day beard. My wife likes it, and so does my daughter.

The schnauzer actually only suited you and Thomas Magnum.

Thank you! That was one of the quirks at the big tournaments back then, where we boys said we wouldn’t shave while we were there – that resulted in a mustache that we were happy to get off after the World Cup.

You were one of the best goalkeepers in the world. What was your greatest strength?
