First choose the model that suits you

There are in fact several types of fences. Firstly, you must choose between:

  • A fence. Made up of panels, this very aesthetic fence perfectly protects you from prying eyes. You will find very decorative models from the designer of aluminum fences SIB, the ultimate exterior.
  • A classic, openwork or blackout fence and most often resting on a supporting wall. Generally less than 3 meters, this fence represents the most common model.
  • A flexible fence. Packaged in rolls, it is a practical fencing solution for somewhat uneven terrain.
  • A rigid fence. In the form of panels, it is more suitable for flat terrain.
  • A plant fence, composed of hedges or shrubs. It is a very decorative solution.
  • Gabions. It is a fence made up of stones enclosed in wire mesh cages.
  • A low wall, made of stones or concrete blocks.

Then take an interest in the material

The type of fence chosen, you must decide on the material that will make it. You actually have the choice between a fence:

  • In wood : a great classic and an authentic and warm material. Depending on the species chosen, however, care must be taken to maintain it.
  • Composite wood. Composed of a mixture of plastic and wood fibers, this material offers good weather resistance.
  • In aluminium. Requiring little maintenance and available in several colors, this very stylish material is insensitive to corrosion.
  • PVC. Simple to install and easy to maintain, a PVC fence does not always resist external aggression very well.
  • Wrought iron. Available in several shapes, this very elegant fence is a great classic, which is becoming very trendy again;
  • Concrete. Cold only in appearance, concrete lends itself very well to imitating other materials.
  • In stone : a very solid fence, which gives a real look to the house.

The price: an element not to forget

You can only really choose your fence if you know the price. This is a criterion that must always be taken into consideration. Indeed, the cost of the fence must be compatible with the budget you plan to devote to it.

It largely depends on two factors: the chosen material and installation, if however you do not plan to install the fence yourself. And if it is custom designed, it will cost you a little more.

It costs, on average, between 10 euros per meter for mesh, and a few hundred euros per meter for a wrought iron or aluminum fence. In fact, these materials are, along with stone, those that remain the most expensive.

On the other hand, the price of a fence made of concrete, wood, and especially PVC, will in principle be more affordable.

Respect the rules

You have chosen the model and material of your future fence and you know the price. But before building it, you must put yourself in good standing, first of all with your neighbors.

It is indeed advisable to notify them of the installation of a fence, so as to ensure that it will not bother them. Also check that it does not encroach on contiguous land.

Having done this, you may still be required to:

  • Consult the Local Urban Plan (PLU). You must in fact respect the requirements of this document, which, depending on the municipality, imposes rules concerning the materials, the height and sometimes the colors of fences erected in the area concerned.
  • To make a prior declaration of work at the town hall. If the fence exceeds a certain height, or if it is located near a building classified as a historic monument, this formality is obligatory. But some municipalities impose this formality on all fence owners. The same goes for a possible modification.
