Three seniors died in a fire in a retirement home in Wardenburg (Oldenburg district) on Sunday evening. According to the fire department, ten other residents were injured, some critically.

The deceased were believed to have suffered from smoke inhalation. The other residents of the facility could therefore be rescued from their rooms. “The civil courage of residents and neighbors was very great, they helped the nurses with the evacuation, that worked well,” said fire department spokesman Max Eilers.

Wardenburg: smoke detectors alert the fire brigade

According to the information, the fire in the Südmoslesfehn district was reported around 7:40 p.m. The fire alarms in the retirement home with 37 residents had been triggered and thus alerted the fire brigade directly. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The injured were taken to various hospitals.

Residents initially taken to emergency shelters

The uninjured residents were first checked medically by the rescue workers in a dining room in a neighboring building of the old people’s home. The building is only partially habitable, which is why the evacuated residents were first taken to emergency and nursing accommodation.

Why was there a fire in the retirement home?

The cause of the fire is still unclear. Police are investigating and fire investigators are to inspect the building as soon as possible.
