The president will visit Ukraine in February

Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that he would go to Ukraine “in February”. “I myself will go to Ukraine in February” and “we will make new deliveries: around forty Scalp missiles and several hundred bombs,” the president said at a press conference. The head of state also indicated that France was “in the process of finalizing a security agreement” with kyiv of the type concluded on Friday between the United Kingdom and Ukraine over ten years, which he will announce during his on-site visit.

“We can’t let Russia win”

France and the European Union “will have to make new decisions in the coming weeks and months, precisely so as not to let Russia win,” he added. “We cannot let Russia win and we must not do so because then the very security of Europe and the entire Russian neighborhood would be called into question,” he stressed.

Asked about the prospect of a Donald Trump victory in the US presidential election in November, which could call into question support for Ukraine, he said that “we should not be interested in people. We must have the lucidity to see that the United States of America is a great ally whose courage we will celebrate” on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Allied Landings in Normandy next June.

“But it is a democracy which is also going through a crisis whose first priority is itself, and whose second priority, the Chinese question”, he continued, defending in this context “a stronger Europe, who knows how to protect herself and who does not depend on others.”
