the president of the Scientific Council not in favor of the obligation to wear a mask

Guest of RTL this Thursday morning, Jean-François Delfraissy, spoke about the epidemic rebound which is currently affecting France. Not in favor of the return of the obligation to wear a mask, he also showed himself convinced of the country’s ability to resist the BA.5 variant.

Jean-François Delfraissy, president of the Scientific Council, spoke this Thursday morning on RTL as the 7th wave of Covid-19 hits France. As a reminder, almost 150,000 new cases were recorded on Tuesday, an increase of 54% in one week. The incidence rate doubled in seven days.

However, the professor was optimistic about the current epidemic rebound in France.

“I believe that we will hold on, provided that we resume vaccination in the elderly, and re-examine a certain number of recommendations,” he said.

Not in favor of an obligation to wear a mask, the professor nevertheless appeals to everyone’s vigilance.

“The government was right not to make it compulsory to wear a mask”

Contamination peak at the end of July

The President of the Scientific Council returned to the BA.5 variant which is currently rife in France. Variant which he described as “no more severe than the others although very transmissible”.

This should not spoil the summer, he wanted to reassure, specifying that the peak of the 7th wave is expected for the end of July.

“Last year at the same period we suffered the wave of the Delta variant. At the time the peak had arrived around the end of July before a new rebound at the end of October, beginning of November”.

According to Jean-François Delfraissy, the wave of the BA.5 variant could take the same path. And to warn: “There will be new variants from the fall”.

The professor calls on the most fragile French people to already be vaccinated for their second booster dose for which appointments are on the rise.

Finally, and while the health crisis law is due to end on July 31, Delfraissy called for “keeping tools to deal with a possible new variant”.
