The Mucem swimming pool project falls through

A swimming pool project that fell through… “Planned for the 2024 bathing season”, the seawater swimming pool, which was to open in June at the foot of the Mucem museum, will not see the light of day. The Marseille town hall announced it on Tuesday, specifying Provence. The reason ? Security conditions would not be completely guaranteed.

A poorly chosen site?

As part of the promises of the Marseille Spring, the development of this basin at the foot of the Mucem had been announced in the summer of 2023, before being postponed due to a technical difficulty which at that time required “additional studies and a call for tenders”.

A year later, the “hollow quay” (empty space that can act as a siphon and endanger swimmers) still poses a problem.

“We followed the project carried out by the City, but we remained convinced that the site had been poorly chosen,” laments to Provence Benjamin Clasen, president of the Free Swimmers association. Accustomed to protest dives (and for the moment illegal) at the foot of the Mucem, the association is also carrying out a development project. “But on the other side of the museum, wider, sunnier,” she explains.
