The turn of the year is always a time for reflection, CDU leader Friedrich Merz had just said in his Christmas message. And his party clearly accepted the mandate over the holidays. First, North Rhine-Westphalia’s CDU Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst mused on Christmas Eve in the Picture on Sunday about the candidacy for chancellor and, even when asked, did not want to put Merz as a candidate for chancellor on his wish list. Wüst announced that the Union will only decide on the issue next year. He would like the Union not to make things too easy for the traffic lights by leading personnel debates at an inopportune time.
