Munich: Balance sheet of green-red in sports & leisure – no new hall for now – Munich

A new hall, a renovated stadium for the lions, more places to swim – the coalition’s goals for sports and leisure have become a long way off. Two years ago, the city council decided to make the Grünwalder Stadium suitable for the second division again for 77 million euros. Nothing happened after that, but that cannot be blamed on the green-red coalition.

On the one hand, work on the Grünwalder Stadium cannot begin until 2027, when the renovation of the Olympic Stadium is completed; This is intended as an alternative playground. On the other hand, the required commitment from TSV 1860 to use the Giesinger Arena in the long term is missing. The internal club squabbles hinder any progress.

A medium-sized hall for (fringe) sports such as handball or volleyball with a spectator capacity of at least 2,500 has been completely shelved. Although the construction is in the coalition agreement, the Department for Education and Sport currently sees no need. There are no corresponding first division teams in sight in the city, and there is enough capacity in the old Rudi Sedlmayer Hall and the new multifunctional hall in the Olympic Park. In the long term, a new hall could be built on the site of the discarded ice stadium.

And anyone who had hoped that they would soon be able to go swimming more beautifully or at all will have to be patient: not everything that has been decided can be implemented quickly. In any case, the renovation of the family pool in Forstenrieder Park with a larger water area will no longer be completed during this term of office of the city council.

And the new bathing lake in the west of Munich, between the new development area of Freiham and the municipality of Gräfelfing, is still waiting to be built. The town hall coalition initiated the project in the summer of 2023. It will probably be another ten years before you can swim there.
