The French child who fell into a crater is in a “stable” condition

He fell Friday in a crater 100 meters deep on one of the Galapagos islands (Ecuador). The 8-year-old French child is in “stable” condition and “he is receiving the necessary medical care”, the French embassy in Quito announced on Sunday.

The facts occurred Friday in one of the two craters of the site of Los Gemelos on the island of Santa Cruz, according to the Galapagos National Park. “The rapid intervention of rescuers trained in these emergencies made it possible to get it out of the bottom of the crater, more than 100 meters away,” he said in his report dated Friday.

Los Gemelos are formed by two craters, which face each other, caused by the collapse of magma chambers, a popular hiking spot for tourists.

“A Brazilian said he saw him fall”

“We were on the way back, to the taxi, and Axel, [l’aîné de mes enfants] was in the back, looking at things, and at one point there was a scream. A Brazilian said he saw him fall,” Jerome, the boy’s father, told local media.

And to add that “when [les pompiers] arrived, they used ropes. It was very difficult, they couldn’t see it. There was this person, the Brazilian, who had a drone that helped the firefighters locate the child.”

The little boy was taken to the island’s Republica del Ecuador hospital. According to its director, Boris Daza, quoted by the local press, “the patient arrived in a non-critical condition despite the situation”.

The Galapagos archipelago, which owes its name to its giant tortoises, is located 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador.
